The fauna
Wildlife of the Gran Sasso National Park

The most interesting species of the Park is represented by the chamois, ungulate exclusive of the Apennines which until last century had its stronghold in the Gran Sasso. Direct persecution of ”chamois hunters” at the end it caused the disappearance of the last century. After a hundred years, the suede is back on the Gran Sasso, where he is present with a core of about 50 people, thanks to a successful re-entry operation. Living within the Park other large herbivores such as deer and roe deer, and their predator par excellence, the Apennine wolf, which is rebuilding small flocks. Some time ago, too sporadic appearances Marsicano brown bear. Among the other mammals are martens, wild cat, badger, marten, polecat, porcupine, and several other rodent species. There are also rare species such as the Apennine wolf, wild cat. Birds of prey include peregrine falcon, Lanner falcon, the goshawk and golden eagle, while inter-species rock, alpine chough, the chough, the woodpecker, and the Highest snow finch and water pipit .
Among the amphibians, which are also popular, we report three species of newt, the salamander, the Italian newt, the spectacled small salamander.

Flora and Vegetation of the Gran Sasso National Park
In the Park is home to over 2000 species of plants. The remarkable richness anddiversity of flora and vegetation to be found both in the high altitudes that reach 3000meters, in different geological substratum of the main mountain ranges. The mostvaluable component of the flora is that of the higher elevations, with many ”wrecks”glacial northern or eastern origin, coming from the Eurasian steppes and the Balkan mountains, and native plants that make the Park one of the most interesting flora ofMediterranean areas, with high biological diversity

The ancient cultural tradition of the people of the park is evidenced by the numerousand elaborate craftsmanship, from the creation of tasty local produce and cuisine andfeatures from the local folklore expressions that still survive at the time, playing an important role of cultural and tourist attraction. For the craft, we highlight some of the most significant fact, as the potters of Castelli, the master saddlers of L’Aquila, the coppersmiths of Tossicia, the masons of Amatrice and the charcoal of Arquata del Tronto.
